On many built-in models the compressor and condenser live at the top of the cabinet behind a grille, with the evaporator and fans down in the fresh food and freezer sections. Column units split refrigeration into separate cabinets, each with its own sealed system and electronics, so one side can fail while the other runs perfectly.

Older Top-Freezers and Rental Units on the West Side

Many west-side kitchens still run a plain top-freezer refrigerator that has been in place for years. Its classic failure is a defrost problem: frost thickens on the freezer's back wall, cold air stops reaching the fresh-food side, and milk turns warm while ice cream stays hard.
