Houses, Apartments & Condos Across the Charlotte Area

A microwave uses a magnetron to send microwave energy into a shielded cavity, heating the water in food from the inside in minutes. Because it gets used several times a day for reheating, defrosting and quick meals, a fault is felt right away, and some faults, like sparking or a door that runs open, are a real safety concern. We repair countertop, over-the-range, built-in and trim-kit microwaves, microwave drawers, and convection or combination microwave ovens, including inverter models. Over-the-range units get attention to their vent fans, dampers, filters and cooktop lights along with the cooking side.

Why Microwave Repair Is Not a DIY Job

Inside the cabinet, a microwave steps household power up to several thousand volts to drive the magnetron. A high-voltage capacitor stores part of that energy, and it can hold a dangerous, potentially lethal charge for a long time after the cord is unplugged. That is why we tell owners not to remove the outer cabinet, even to look.

Our technicians discharge the capacitor safely before testing any internal part. Owner checks for a microwave stay on the outside: the outlet, the breaker, the door, the turntable, the filters and the cavity surfaces. Anything behind the cabinet panels is a job for a technician.

How a Microwave Heats, and Which Parts Fail

A transformer or, on inverter models, a circuit board boosts the voltage. A diode and capacitor double it, and the magnetron turns it into microwave energy that travels through a short metal channel, the waveguide, into the cavity. A mica cover on the side wall keeps food splatter out of the waveguide. The door has several interlock switches that cut power the instant it opens.

Failures cluster in a few places: magnetrons wear out, diodes and capacitors short, door switches break, membrane keypads stop responding, and waveguide covers burn once they are soaked in grease. Over-the-range units add vent fans, dampers and filters that clog with grease from the cooktop below.

What the Main Symptoms Usually Mean

A microwave that runs, lights up and turns the tray but does not heat has a fault in the high-voltage circuit: the magnetron, diode, capacitor, transformer or a thermal cutout. One that does nothing at all, or blows its fuse repeatedly, often has a failed door interlock switch that is shorting the line. Keypad problems usually show up as one or two dead buttons before the whole pad fails.

Sparking means energy is arcing to metal, grease or a damaged surface. Stop the cycle and unplug the unit. A microwave that runs with the door open, or keeps running when the door opens, has a failed safety circuit and should not be used again until repaired. Burning plastic or electrical smells mean the same thing: unplug and leave it unplugged.

Owner Checks That Are Safe to Do

Confirm the outlet works by plugging in a lamp, and check the kitchen breaker and any GFCI outlet on the counter. Some over-the-range microwaves share a circuit with nearby outlets, so a tripped breaker can knock out both at once, and a toaster or kettle running on the same line can trip it during a long cycle.

Clean the cavity and the waveguide cover with mild soap and water while the unit is unplugged, and look for chipped paint or bare metal. Reseat the turntable on its coupler. On over-the-range units, wash the metal grease filters and check the date on the charcoal filter if the unit recirculates air. A one-minute water test is the simplest way to confirm whether the microwave is heating.

What to Expect When We Come Out

Booking is by phone or online, and same-day visits are often possible when the schedule allows. The technician confirms the symptom, discharges the capacitor, and tests the high-voltage parts, interlocks and controls in order rather than replacing parts on a hunch.

You get the diagnosis and the price before we do any work. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you before you decide. Repairs carry a 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty, and if the microwave is still under the manufacturer's warranty, we point that out so you can use it.

Repair or Replace: Microwave Edition

Microwaves have shorter lives than most kitchen appliances, often around a decade, and they are the category where replacement wins most often. A failed magnetron or inverter board on an inexpensive countertop model frequently costs a large share of a new one, and we will tell you that plainly.

The math is different for over-the-range, built-in and drawer models. Their price is higher, installation is involved, and built-ins have to match a cabinet cutout or trim kit. A door switch, keypad, vent motor, waveguide cover or turntable motor is usually well worth repairing on those units, and even a magnetron can make sense.

Keeping an Over-the-Range Microwave Healthy

The vent system sits right above the cooktop, and grease rising from pans is its main enemy. Washing the metal filters about once a month for a busy kitchen keeps air moving, protects the fan motor and lowers the fire risk. Turn on the vent fan whenever you boil or fry so steam does not condense in the control panel.

Wipe the cavity after splatters before they bake on, and keep the waveguide cover clean, because a grease-soaked cover is a common source of sparking. Never run the microwave empty, and use only microwave-safe cookware without metal trim. In humid summers, leaving the door open for a minute after cooking helps the cavity dry and keeps odors from building.
