About Insignia Microwave Repair
Insignia microwaves include basic countertop models and over-the-range units that double as a range hood with a fan and light. Inside, both types use the same core parts: a magnetron to produce microwave energy, a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode to power it, a set of door interlock switches, and a control board with a touch panel. These parts are compact and inexpensive, but the high-voltage section is dangerous even after the unit is unplugged.
The most common fault is a microwave that goes completely dead, which often means an internal fuse has blown, sometimes because a door interlock switch failed. A unit that lights up and spins but does not heat usually has a failed magnetron, diode or capacitor. Touch panels can stop responding to certain buttons, turntables stop turning when their motor wears, and storm surges can damage the control board. On over-the-range models, vent fans and lights also fail.
You can safely check a few things. Make sure the outlet works by plugging in a lamp, reset the breaker if it tripped, and confirm the door closes firmly with no broken latch hooks. Do not run the microwave empty, and do not run it if you see sparking from the door seal area. Never open the cabinet yourself, because the capacitor can hold a lethal charge.
Our technician discharges the capacitor safely, then tests the fuse, interlock switches, magnetron, diode, transformer and control. We also check that the door switches are aligned properly, because a mismatched door can make a new fuse blow again right away.
On a small countertop Insignia, most repairs other than a fuse or switch cost close to a new microwave, and we will usually recommend replacement. Over-the-range models are a different case, since replacing one involves mounting and venting work. Fixing a switch, fuse or fan on an OTR unit is often the better value.
Where Insignia Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Blown internal fuse from a failed door interlock switch
- Magnetron, diode or capacitor failure causing no heat
- Touch panel buttons unresponsive after wear or moisture
- Over-the-range vent fan or light circuit failure
