About Smeg Microwave Repair
Smeg is not a major microwave brand in the US, so it helps to be clear about what we can sensibly repair. The units we see are mostly built-in compact combination ovens that match Smeg wall ovens, combining a microwave with a grill element and sometimes convection. Smeg has also sold countertop microwaves styled like its retro small appliances in some markets, but those are usually not worth an in-home repair visit, and we will tell you that honestly.
A built-in combination oven has more going on than a basic microwave. The magnetron, high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode generate the microwave energy, while a separate grill element and, on some models, a convection fan and ring element handle browning. Door interlock switches confirm the door is shut. Typical faults are a microwave function that runs but does not heat, often a magnetron or high-voltage component, a grill or convection mode that has stopped, a turntable motor failure, and door switches that wear and stop the unit from starting.
You can check a few things safely. Confirm the clock is set and the child lock is not active, especially after a power outage. Test whether the grill or convection mode works when microwave mode does not, since that narrows the cause. Do not remove the outer casing: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the unit is unplugged, and that work belongs to a technician.
We remove the unit from its housing when needed, discharge the capacitor, and test the magnetron, transformer, diode, interlocks and control. We tell you what failed and the price before doing the work. Some parts for these compact combi ovens are imported, so we check availability first.
Door switches, turntable motors and grill elements are usually reasonable repairs. A magnetron or control failure on an older built-in unit is worth comparing against replacement, keeping in mind that a new unit must fit the existing cabinet opening.
Where Smeg Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Magnetron or high-voltage diode failure stopping microwave heating
- Grill element or convection fan failing in combination modes
- Worn door interlock switches preventing the oven from starting
- Turntable motor stopping or turning intermittently
