About Kenmore Microwave Repair
Kenmore microwaves came from several manufacturers, including LG and others, in over-the-range, countertop and built-in styles. Over-the-range models add an exhaust fan and cooktop light. Inside, every microwave shares the same basic system: a magnetron, high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, door interlock switches, a turntable motor and an electronic control. Many Kenmore over-the-range microwaves were designed to mount on a standard wall plate above the range, so a replacement from another brand may need a new plate and new holes in the cabinet.
Common failures include door switches that wear out and stop the microwave from starting, and high-voltage parts such as the magnetron, diode or capacitor that fail and leave food cold. Turntable motors stall. Over-the-range vent fan motors wear out and get noisy, and a failed thermostat can leave the fan running. Keypads stop responding from age, steam or grease. On older models, some parts may be discontinued. Grease buildup on the exhaust fan blades also slows the fan and makes it noisy. A burning smell or sparks from the waveguide cover usually means food residue has carbonized there.
Find the model number, usually inside the door frame or on the back, and share it when booking. Make sure the door closes firmly. If the display froze after an outage, switching the circuit off for a minute often clears it. Clean the grease filters on an over-the-range unit. Never open the microwave cabinet yourself; the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.
Our diagnosis confirms the maker, then safely discharges the high-voltage circuit and tests the magnetron, diode, capacitor, transformer, door switches, turntable motor and controls. For over-the-range units, we test the fan and thermostat. Some repairs require removing the microwave from the wall or cabinet.
Door switches, fans and turntable motors are usually worth repairing. A failed magnetron or control board on an older Kenmore microwave, especially with discontinued parts, may make replacement the better choice, and we will tell you honestly.
Where Kenmore Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Door interlock switches failing and preventing startup
- Magnetron or high-voltage diode failure leaving food cold
- Over-the-range vent fan motor noisy or failing
- Keypad unresponsive or discontinued parts on older models
