About GE Microwave Repair
GE microwaves include over-the-range models that double as vent hoods, countertop and built-in units, drawer microwaves in Profile and Café lines, and Advantium speed-cook ovens that combine microwave energy with halogen lamps and, on some models, convection. Standard models use a magnetron, transformer, capacitor and diode, all protected by door switches. Advantium adds halogen lamps and additional controls, making diagnosis more involved.
The most common GE microwave failures are door switches that fail and blow the main fuse, high-voltage components that fail so the microwave runs without heating, and touch controls damaged by steam on over-the-range units. Advantium units can have lamp failures that reduce browning, along with the usual magnetron and control problems. Drawer microwaves have their own drawer mechanisms and motors that can jam. Vent fans on over-the-range units wear out and get noisy. A microwave that heats unevenly or only on one side may have a stalled turntable motor or, on some built-in models, a failed stirrer that normally spreads the energy around the cavity.
Owners can check the outlet and breaker, clean the grease filters, and check that the door latches firmly. On drawer microwaves, check for anything blocking the drawer track. Do not open the cabinet: microwave capacitors can hold dangerous voltage after unplugging, and Advantium and drawer units have additional high-voltage areas. If you see arcing inside, stop using the unit.
We discharge the high-voltage system and test the magnetron, diode, capacitor and transformer, check door switches and the main fuse, and test controls. On Advantium units we check the halogen lamps and their circuits. On drawer microwaves we test the drawer motor and switches.
For over-the-range, Advantium and drawer microwaves, repairs are usually worth it because replacement is costly and involves installation. On countertop units, a magnetron or board failure may cost more than a replacement, and we will say so. An over-the-range unit also needs its mounting checked after any repair, because the bracket and top bolts carry its full weight above the cooktop.
Where GE Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Door switch failure blowing the main fuse, unit dead
- Magnetron or diode failure, microwave runs but does not heat
- Advantium halogen lamp failure reducing browning and speed-cook results
- Drawer microwave motor or track jammed, drawer will not open
