About GE Dishwasher Repair
GE dishwashers, from basic built-ins to GE Profile and Café models, use a circulation pump that drives the spray arms and a separate drain pump that removes water. Older GE models often included a hard-food disposer that chopped particles, while many newer ones use filters, including fine filters some owners need to clean. Profile and Café units add features such as bottle jets, steam pre-wash and third racks. A heating element or heater in the circulation path warms the water and helps drying.
Circulation pump failures are the GE dishwasher fault we see most often. When the pump fails, the dishwasher fills and drains but barely sprays, leaving dirty dishes, or it hums without spraying. Drain pump failures leave standing water. GE dishwashers can also leak from the door gasket, a cracked sump or a loose hose, and on some models the door latch or switch fails so the cycle will not start. Clogged filters and spray arms cause poor cleaning on newer filter-based models.
Turn off the dishwasher at the breaker before checking anything. Remove the lower rack and clean the filters if your model has removable ones, and clear food debris from the sump. Remove the spray arms and clear clogged holes. Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks, and make sure the disposer's knockout plug was removed if one was recently installed. If the unit leaks, look for suds caused by the wrong detergent before assuming a part has failed.
We test the circulation and drain pumps, check the heater and water inlet valve, inspect door gaskets, latch and switches, and look for leaks under the tub. If the dishwasher is not cleaning well, we check water temperature and spray arm flow.
Pump, valve, latch and seal repairs are generally worthwhile on GE dishwashers. A control board or circulation pump failure on an older basic model may be close to replacement cost, and we will tell you the price up front.
Where GE Dishwashers Tend to Fail
- Circulation pump failure, dishwasher fills but sprays weakly
- Drain pump failure or blockage leaving water in the tub
- Door gasket or sump leak dripping onto the floor
- Door latch switch failure stopping the cycle from starting
