About GE Dryer Repair
GE dryers are belt-driven machines with a drum supported at the back by rollers or a rear bearing and at the front by plastic or felt glides on a front bulkhead. A single motor turns the drum and blower. Electric models use a heating element, while gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and valve coils. Newer GE and GE Profile dryers add sensor drying, steam and venting diagnostics, and some offer connected features through the SmartHQ app.
Front drum glides are a classic GE wear item. When they wear through, the drum rubs on the bulkhead and makes a scraping sound, and it can leave black marks on clothes. Belts, idler pulleys and rear rollers also wear and cause squeals and thumps. No-heat problems usually involve a thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat or heating element on electric units, or an igniter or coils on gas models. As with any dryer, a restricted vent is the most common reason those safety parts fail.
Owners should unplug the dryer before any checks. Clean the lint screen and its housing. Check the vent duct behind the dryer for kinks or crushing, and confirm the exterior hood opens with good airflow while the dryer runs. Check both legs of the breaker for electric models, and confirm the gas valve is open for gas units. Any smell of gas means everyone goes outside and the gas utility gets a call from there.
We remove the front panel to inspect glides, rollers, belt and idler, test the thermal fuse, thermostats and element or igniter and coils, and check vent airflow. Replacing wear parts as a set is usually smart, since glides, rollers and belts tend to wear together.
GE dryers are almost always worth repairing. Glides, belts, rollers and heating parts are moderately priced, and only an older dryer with a failed board or motor may lean toward replacement.
Where GE Dryers Tend to Fail
- Front drum glides worn through, scraping noise and black marks
- Thermal fuse or high-limit blown by a clogged exhaust vent
- Belt, idler pulley or rear rollers worn, squealing and thumping
- Gas valve coils or igniter failing, intermittent heat on gas models
