About Amana Dryer Repair

Amana dryers are built on Whirlpool's long-running dryer chassis, with a drum supported by rear rollers, a belt and idler pulley, a heating element or gas burner, and a set of thermostats and a thermal fuse. Both electric and gas versions are common, and most have simple dial controls. That proven design is one reason Amana dryers are usually easy and economical to repair.

The thermal fuse is the most common failure. When lint restricts the vent, the dryer overheats and the fuse blows, cutting power to the motor or the heat circuit depending on the model. Drum rollers, idler pulleys and belts wear and cause thumping, squealing or no tumbling. Electric heating elements burn out. On gas Amana dryers, tired valve coils produce a telltale pattern: the burner lights at the start of the cycle, goes out on its first thermostat cycle, and never comes back.

Empty the lint screen before every load. Pull the dryer out and inspect the flexible duct for crushing or kinks; foil or plastic ducts should be replaced with rigid or semi-rigid metal. Check the exterior vent hood to make sure the flap opens and is not clogged with lint or pollen. Long vent runs in two-story homes clog faster. Unplug the dryer, and close the gas valve on gas models, before moving it.

Our diagnosis starts with vent airflow, then tests the thermal fuse, thermostats, heating element or igniter and valve coils, motor, belt, rollers and idler. If the fuse has blown, we find out why, since replacing it without fixing the vent just leads to another failure. Most parts are shared with Whirlpool and easy to get.

Fuse, belt, roller, element and igniter repairs are inexpensive and almost always worthwhile on an Amana dryer. A failed motor on an older model is a closer call, and we will help you decide. Amana dryers are also simple enough that a clean vent and a new set of rollers can make an older unit run quietly again.

Where Amana Dryers Tend to Fail

  • Thermal fuse blown by a restricted, lint-filled vent
  • Drum rollers or idler pulley worn, causing thumping
  • Gas igniter or valve coils weakening and stopping heat
  • Heating element burned out on electric models
