Speed Queen Dryer Repair

Speed Queen dryers share the same commercial background as the washers: steel cabinets, heavy drums, and controls that range from simple mechanical dials to electronic panels. They are offered in electric and gas versions. The heating systems are conventional, with a heating element on electric models and a gas burner with an igniter and valve on gas models, but the rest of the dryer is built more heavily than most residential units.

No-heat calls are the most common, and they usually trace back to airflow. When a vent is long, crushed or clogged with lint, the dryer overheats and a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat trips to protect it. On electric models, heating elements eventually burn out. On gas models, igniters weaken and gas valve coils fail, so the burner lights briefly or not at all. Drive belts and idler pulleys wear and cause squealing or a drum that will not turn. Pollen and dust in spring and summer add to lint loads.

With the dryer unplugged, clean the lint screen and the screen housing. Pull the dryer out and check the vent hose for kinks or crushing, and confirm the outside vent flap opens when the dryer runs. If you have a gas dryer and smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside; do not try to find the leak yourself. Two-story homes with upstairs laundry often have long vent runs that need professional cleaning.

Our diagnosis includes testing the thermal fuse, high-limit and cycling thermostats, heating element or igniter and gas valve coils, belt, idler, motor and controls. We also measure airflow, because replacing a fuse without fixing a restricted vent leads to the same failure later.

Speed Queen dryers are well worth repairing. Most of the parts that fail are modest, and the drum and cabinet are built to last. We will only suggest replacement in unusual cases, such as an unsupported electronic control on an older model.
