About Kenmore Dryer Repair

Most Kenmore dryers were built by Whirlpool and carry the 110 model prefix. LG-built units use 796, and some Frigidaire-built front-load pairs use 417. Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers use a familiar design with a drum supported by rollers, a belt and idler pulley, a heating element or gas burner, and a set of thermostats and a thermal fuse that protect against overheating. Many of those Whirlpool-built 110 dryers share parts with Whirlpool, Maytag and Roper models of the same era, which keeps them easy to supply.

On Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers, the thermal fuse is the classic failure. When the vent clogs, the dryer overheats and the fuse blows, so the dryer stops running or stops heating, depending on the model. Drum rollers, belts and idler pulleys wear and cause thumping or squealing. Electric heating elements burn out. Gas models wear out their igniters and valve coils, often lighting once and then failing to reignite.

Empty the lint screen before each load, then pull the dryer out a few inches and look for a flattened or kinked transition duct. Go outside and make sure the vent flap opens when the dryer runs. If the vent run is long, as in many two-story homes with upstairs laundry, consider a professional vent cleaning. Unplug the dryer, and shut off the gas on gas models, before moving it. Do not bypass a thermal fuse.

During diagnosis, we check vent airflow and test the thermal fuse, thermostats, heating element or igniter and valve coils, motor, belt and rollers. If a fuse has blown, we look at why, since replacing it without fixing the airflow just leads to another failure. On LG-built models, we use LG's diagnostic approach.

Most repairs on Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers are inexpensive and very much worth it. These dryers are durable and easy to service. A motor or control failure on a very old dryer is a judgment call we will help you make.

Where Kenmore Dryers Tend to Fail

  • Thermal fuse blown by a clogged or crushed vent
  • Drum rollers and idler pulley worn, causing thumping
  • Gas valve coils weakening, so the burner will not relight
  • Heating element burned out on electric Whirlpool-built models
