Kenmore dishwashers were built mainly by Whirlpool, with model numbers starting in 665, and by Frigidaire and others over the years. Whirlpool-built Kenmore dishwashers include models with a hard-food disposer and newer models with a manual filter. Frigidaire-built Kenmore dishwashers follow Frigidaire's design. Kenmore Elite models often add stainless tubs and more features.

On Whirlpool-built Kenmore dishwashers, common problems include drain pump failures, wash motor wear, inlet valves that clog or fail, and control boards or touch panels that stop responding. Newer models with a manual filter often clean poorly when the filter clogs. Frigidaire-built units may develop door gasket leaks, drain pump failures and wash motor problems. Each maker also uses different diagnostic codes. Older Whirlpool-built units with the hard-food disposer can jam when a fruit pit or glass shard reaches the chopper blade, producing a grinding or humming sound.

Find the model number, usually on the edge of the tub or inside the door, and share it when booking. Cut power to the dishwasher, then lift out whatever filter or screen your model has at the bottom of the tub and rinse it. Check that the spray arms spin and their holes are clear. Make sure the drain hose is not kinked and the garbage disposal knockout plug was removed. If water is pooling on the floor, shut off the water supply under the sink.

Our diagnosis starts by confirming the maker, then running the appropriate test cycle or diagnostic mode. We test the drain pump, wash motor, inlet valve, heating element, door switch and controls. If you are on a well, we check the inlet screen for sediment.

Pump, valve and filter repairs are usually worthwhile on a Kenmore dishwasher. A control or wash motor failure on an older basic unit may cost close to a new one, and we will give you an honest recommendation. Kenmore Elite models with stainless tubs generally justify more repair than basic plastic-tub units.
