About KitchenAid Dishwasher Repair
KitchenAid dishwashers are built on Whirlpool's platform, with a stainless tub, a wash motor and pump at the base, a separate drain pump, and an electronic control that manages fill, wash and dry. Many models have a third rack and extra spray features. Since roughly the early 2010s, most use a two-part manual filter in place of the older food grinder, which keeps them quieter but makes routine cleaning the owner's job.
That filter accounts for a surprising number of service calls. When it clogs, wash water recirculates poorly and dishes come out gritty or cloudy, even though nothing has broken. Beyond the filter, we often see control boards or touch panels that stop responding, wash motors that hum but do not spin, and drain pumps jammed by debris. A blinking light pattern on the panel is the control's way of reporting a fault.
With power off at the breaker or plug, remove the lower rack, twist out the filter assembly and rinse both parts under warm water. Check that the spray arms spin freely and their holes are clear. Make sure the drain hose under the sink is not kinked. Clean the drain air gap on the counter if your sink has one. Use detergent intended for automatic dishwashers only; dish soap creates suds that can leak out.
During our visit, we can run the service diagnostic built into many KitchenAid controls to read stored faults, then confirm each with a meter. We test the wash motor, drain pump, inlet valve, door switch and heating element, and check the user interface before blaming the main board. Some faults trace to a damaged wire harness at the door hinge.
With a stainless tub and sturdy racks, most KitchenAid dishwashers are worth repairing when a pump, motor or valve fails. A failed control and wash motor together on an older machine is a bigger decision, and we will give you the price before anything moves forward.
