About Maytag Dishwasher Repair
Maytag dishwashers are sold on cleaning muscle, with names like PowerBlast for a high-pressure, high-heat cycle and Dual Power Filtration for the two-stage filter in the tub floor. Under the badge they are Whirlpool-platform machines: a wash motor driving lower and upper spray arms, a separate drain pump, a heating element, a water inlet valve and a door latch with switches that tell the control the door is sealed. Some Maytag models add a stainless steel tub and a third rack, and older pre-acquisition Maytag dishwashers use completely different parts.
The filters are where many problems begin. Maytag's Dual Power Filtration catches fine particles that older grinder-style designs used to chop up, which keeps the wash water cleaner but means the filters fill with grease and food until they are rinsed. A neglected filter leaves grit on glasses, makes the tub smell sour and slows draining, which in turn wears the drain pump. Other common calls include a pump jammed by a cherry pit or glass shard, a latch switch that no longer reports a closed door, a heater that has burned out so dishes stay wet, and slow leaks from the door gasket.
With the breaker off, pull the lower rack, twist the cylindrical filter a quarter turn to release it, lift the flat upper screen and rinse both under warm water with a soft brush. Wipe out the sump. Spin the lower spray arm by hand to make sure it moves freely. Under the sink, check that the drain hose has a high loop and no kinks. On well water, plan to rinse the filters more often, since sediment adds to the buildup.
On a visit we check pump current and impeller condition, measure the heater and inlet valve, test the latch switches and look under the tub with the kick plate off for any sign of leaking. If PowerBlast cycles run cold or long, we also confirm the heater circuit and thermistor are reading correctly.
Pumps, latches, heaters, valves and gaskets are well worth replacing on a Maytag dishwasher. If an older entry-level unit needs a new control board, the repair can land close to replacement cost, and we will say so before any work.
