Maytag Cooktop Repair

Maytag cooktops are built on Whirlpool platforms and come in gas and electric versions, with radiant glass tops being the most common electric style. Gas cooktops use sealed burners with spark ignition, often including a high-output Power Burner for fast boiling and searing. Electric cooktops use radiant ribbon elements controlled by infinite switches or touch controls, sometimes including a dual element. Some models include a warming zone.

On gas Maytag cooktops, the usual complaints are a burner that clicks but does not light, clicking that will not stop after the burner is off, and uneven flames. Grease or spills on electrodes and in burner ports, wet spark switches, or a failing spark module are typical causes. The Power Burner can be more sensitive to misaligned caps. On electric cooktops, a dead element or one stuck on high usually points to the element or the infinite switch. Touch controls can misbehave when wet.

Owners can let the cooktop cool, then clean burner caps, heads, ports and electrodes on gas models and dry them fully before reassembly. Make sure caps sit flat and centered, especially on the Power Burner. Check the breaker for electric cooktops and wipe touch controls clean. Stop using any cracked glass top, and never attempt to work on gas lines yourself. If you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas company.

We test spark modules, switches and electrodes, check gas flow and flame quality at each burner, measure element resistance and test infinite switches or touch controls. We also check wiring connections under the cooktop, where heat can loosen or scorch terminals.

Switch, igniter and element repairs are inexpensive and almost always worth doing on Maytag cooktops. A cracked glass top or a failed touch control on an older cooktop is closer to replacement cost, and we will say so.
