About Hotpoint Cooktop Repair
Hotpoint's built-in cooktops are mostly electric, using either plug-in coil elements or radiant elements under a glass-ceramic surface. Each burner is controlled by an infinite switch that cycles power on and off to hold a heat level, and coil models use receptacles that the element plugs into. The hardware is simple, which means problems are usually isolated to one burner and are straightforward to track down.
With coil cooktops, the most frequent issue is a burner that heats intermittently or not at all because the receptacle has burned or the element terminals have corroded. You may see darkened or pitted terminals, or notice the element works only when wiggled. A burner that stays on high no matter the setting usually means the infinite switch contacts have welded together. Radiant smooth-tops can lose a single element when its internal coil breaks, and the hot-surface indicator can fail independently of the burner itself.
Before you call, turn off the breaker for the cooktop. On a coil model, you can unplug a suspect element and swap it with a working one of the same size to see whether the problem follows the element or stays with the position. Look at the receptacle for scorch marks; if you see them, leave it unplugged until it is replaced. On a glass top, never use a cracked surface, since moisture and food can reach live parts.
Our technician tests each element, receptacle and switch with a meter and checks the wiring at the terminal block, where loose connections cause heat damage. If a receptacle has burned, we usually recommend replacing the element that sat in it, since a pitted element terminal will ruin a new receptacle quickly. You get the cause and the price before work starts.
Element, switch and receptacle repairs are inexpensive on a Hotpoint. A shattered glass top is the main repair that may tip the decision toward a new cooktop, especially on an older unit.
