About Whirlpool Cooktop Repair
Whirlpool built-in cooktops come in gas, radiant glass and coil electric, with some induction options. Gas cooktops use sealed burners with spark electrodes powered by a spark module and controlled by switches on each valve. Radiant cooktops use ribbon elements under the glass, controlled by infinite switches or touch controls. Coil cooktops, still common in rentals and older homes, use plug-in elements that sit in receptacles under each drip pan.
On gas cooktops, the most common call is a burner that clicks but will not light, or clicking that continues after the burner is lit or turned off. Moisture or grease in a spark switch, a dirty electrode or a failing spark module are typical causes. On radiant cooktops, an element that does not heat or stays on high usually means a failed element or infinite switch. Coil cooktops have their own pattern: the element terminals and receptacle can burn and pit, causing intermittent heating or a burner that only works when pushed down.
Owners can start by turning off the cooktop and letting it cool. On gas, remove the caps and burner heads, clean the ports and electrodes, dry everything and reseat the caps. On coil cooktops, unplug a working element and swap it into the dead position to see whether the problem follows the element. Check the breaker for electric units. Do not use a cracked glass top, and never work on gas lines yourself.
We test spark modules and switches, measure element resistance, check infinite switches, inspect receptacles and terminal connections, and check the junction box wiring under the cooktop. Burned connections at the terminal block are a common hidden cause of intermittent heating.
Switches, igniters, elements and receptacles are inexpensive repairs and almost always worth doing. A cracked glass top or a failed touch control on an older cooktop deserves a cost comparison with replacement.
Where Whirlpool Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Spark switch wet or dirty, igniters clicking without stopping
- Coil element receptacle burned and pitted, intermittent heating
- Infinite switch failed on radiant model, zone stuck high or cold
- Spark module weak, burners lighting slowly or not at all
