About Viking Cooktop Repair
Viking's cooktop family is broader than most people realize. The best known are the pro-style gas rangetops, which drop into a countertop cutout with knobs on the front edge and often include a griddle or grill section. Viking also sells sealed-burner gas cooktops with knobs on top, induction cooktops, and electric radiant smoothtops. The gas models use spark ignition fed by a spark module, and many newer burners automatically relight if the flame blows out.
Ignition is where most Viking gas cooktops and rangetops need help. Heavy cast grates and high-output burners mean big pots and frequent boilovers, and liquid that reaches an igniter or the switch behind a knob causes clicking that won't stop. Igniters crack when grates are dropped back into place, and a spark module can fail so that nothing lights. Rangetop griddles have their own burner, igniter and thermostat, and an uneven or cold griddle usually points to one of those. Induction models more often show a power board, coil or cooling fan fault than any mechanical problem.
Start with the knobs off and the surface cool. Lift the grates and caps, wipe away grease, let the igniters and burner bases dry completely, and reseat each cap so it sits flat. On a rangetop, pull the knobs off gently and look for crumbs or spills around the switches. For induction, check that a magnet sticks to the pan bottom and try a breaker reset. If you notice gas odor at any point, go outside without touching switches and call the gas utility or 911.
On the visit we test the spark module output, each igniter and switch, the burner valves and ports, and the griddle components where fitted. Induction units get supply voltage, board and coil testing. You will hear what failed and the repair price before any part is installed.
Ignition parts on a Viking rangetop or cooktop are inexpensive relative to the appliance, and the burners and grates rarely wear out, so repair is almost always the right choice. Induction board repairs cost more but usually still beat replacing the unit and recutting the counter.
Where Viking Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Spark module or igniter failure stopping burners from lighting
- Continuous clicking from moisture or grease on igniters
- Griddle thermostat or burner failure causing a cold or uneven griddle
- Induction power board or fan failure
