About Smeg Cooktop Repair
Smeg makes built-in cooktops in gas, induction and electric ceramic versions, many styled to match its ranges and ovens. The gas units use spark ignition from a shared module, with a small switch behind each knob that triggers the spark. Many Smeg gas hobs also carry flame-failure devices, which use a thermocouple beside each burner to hold the gas valve open only while a flame is present. Induction models rely on a power board, cooling fans and coil sensors under the glass.
On gas tops, the usual complaints are a burner that will not light, a burner that goes out when you release the knob, and constant clicking. Not lighting is often a misaligned burner cap or wet igniter. Going out on release points to the thermocouple not getting hot enough or failing. Constant clicking usually means a spill has reached an igniter switch under the knob, which is common after a boil-over. On induction, zones that will not detect a pan or that shut off with a fault often come down to a cooling fan, a sensor or the power board.
Turn off the gas valve or breaker before touching anything. On gas, lift the caps, dry the burner and igniter, and reseat the caps so they sit flat; Smeg caps only work properly in their correct position. On induction, confirm your pan is magnetic and flat-bottomed, and keep the vents under the cooktop clear of drawers stuffed with towels. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911.
Our diagnosis tests the spark module, igniter switches, thermocouples and valves on gas, or the power supply, fans, sensors and board on induction. You will hear what failed and the price before work starts. Thunderstorm surges can damage induction electronics, so we check the supply too.
Igniter, switch and thermocouple repairs are inexpensive relative to a new cooktop. A cracked induction glass or failed power board on an older unit deserves a frank cost comparison.
Where Smeg Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Wet or dirty igniter switches causing nonstop clicking
- Flame-failure thermocouple letting the burner die on release
- Misaligned burner caps producing uneven or failed ignition
- Induction power board or cooling fan faults shutting zones off
