About Thor Cooktop Repair
Most Thor cooktops in the Charlotte area are gas rangetops that slide into a countertop cutout, giving the pro-range look without an oven below. They use sealed burners under continuous cast iron grates, front-mounted knobs, and electronic spark ignition with a reignition feature that relights a burner if the flame goes out. Some rangetops include a griddle with its own burner and thermostat.
Ignition problems dominate. Each knob turns a switch that tells a spark module to fire, and when liquid from a boil-over gets into one of those switches, the module may click constantly or at random. Electrodes crack or get coated with grease, so the spark jumps to the wrong spot or not at all. A burner cap knocked slightly off center during cleaning will give a lazy, uneven flame or a burner that refuses to light. On griddles, an uneven or overheating surface often points to the griddle thermostat.
You can handle several checks yourself. Turn off power at the breaker or unplug the unit before cleaning near the igniters. Remove the caps and heads, clean the burner ports with a straightened paper clip rather than a toothpick that can snap off, and let everything dry fully before reassembling. Make sure each cap sits flat. If clicking started after a spill, leave power off for a day so the switch can dry. If you ever smell gas, do not touch any switches; leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
On the visit we test the spark module output and each burner switch, inspect electrodes and wiring under the top, and confirm gas pressure and flame quality at every burner. A rangetop whose burners all click together after one spill tells us something different from a single burner failing, so we ask exactly when the problem began.
Switches, electrodes and spark modules are moderate repairs and well worth doing on a Thor rangetop. Burner valves and griddle thermostats are also replaceable. We rarely see a gas rangetop that is not worth repairing unless the top has been badly damaged.
Where Thor Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Wet burner switch making the spark module click constantly
- Cracked or greasy electrode failing to spark the burner
- Misaligned burner cap producing weak, uneven flame
- Griddle thermostat overheating or not holding temperature
