About Thor Stove Repair
When most people call a Thor a stove, they mean the brand's all-gas freestanding range: sealed burners under heavy cast iron grates on top, and a gas oven below with a convection fan and a broiler. It is the model that built Thor's reputation, and its weak points are well known. The steel and cast iron rarely give trouble, while the ignition parts on both the cooktop and in the oven carry most of the wear.
In the oven, the gas safety valve only opens once the ignition system proves it can light the gas. Depending on the model, that means either a glow-style igniter that must reach a certain current or a spark system with flame sensing. Either way, as the ignition parts weaken, owners notice long preheats, a faint gas smell at startup, or an oven that lights and then goes out. On the cooktop, the familiar pattern is clicking without lighting or nonstop clicking after a spill.
Start with simple checks. Make sure the stove is plugged in and the outlet works, because even an all-gas Thor needs power for ignition and the convection fan. Confirm the gas valve behind the stove is open. Clean and reseat any burner caps that look off-center. If the oven smells strongly of gas or you notice a gas smell in the room, do not try to light it; leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
On a visit we test the oven ignition circuit, the safety valve and the thermostat or sensor, and observe the flame through a full ignition sequence. On top, we test the spark module, burner switches and electrodes. Many service calls involve one oven issue and one burner issue at the same time, so we check both before quoting.
Ignition parts, valves, thermostats and spark modules are all reasonable repairs on a Thor gas stove, and the heavy chassis makes repair the better value almost every time. Only severe rust or a damaged oven cavity really changes that calculation.
Where Thor Stoves Tend to Fail
- Weak oven igniter delaying the gas safety valve opening
- Oven lighting briefly and shutting off during preheat
- Burner switches clicking after spills or boil-overs
- Oven thermostat or sensor reading off from actual heat
