About AGA Stove Repair

Many owners call a traditional AGA a stove, and it is closer to a heating stove than a modern range. A heavy cast-iron body is heated continuously by a gas burner or electric elements, and thick insulation holds the heat in. The ovens and hotplates draw on that stored heat, which is why the whole appliance stays warm all the time and gives off steady radiant heat into the kitchen.

The problems we see on a traditional AGA usually involve the heat source or the controls. On gas models, the burner can collect dust and debris and lose efficiency, and a poorly adjusted flame reduces heat output. On electric models, elements fail. Thermostats drift, causing the cooker to run too hot or too cool. Programmable models add electronics that can be damaged by storm surges. In a hot, humid Charlotte summer, an always-on AGA adds significant heat to the house, which some owners manage by turning down or switching off a programmable model.

Use an oven thermometer to check temperatures after a period of rest, and keep the hotplate lids closed. If the AGA has gone out after a power outage, check your manual for restart instructions, since some models need to be relit or reset. Understand that recovery after an outage takes many hours. A gas smell means leaving the house and calling the gas utility or 911; never try to relight a burner if you smell gas.

We check the burner or elements, the thermostat, the flue and ventilation on gas models, and any electronic controls. If the work needed is a full burner service on a model that requires AGA-specific procedures, we tell you whether we can do it or whether a specialist is better.

Traditional AGAs are designed to last decades, so repair is almost always the right choice. Parts can take time to arrive, and we let you know before you approve the work.

Where AGA Stoves Tend to Fail

  • Gas burner losing output from dust and poor adjustment
  • Electric heating element failure lowering core temperature
  • Thermostat drift holding the cooker too hot or cool
  • Programmable controls damaged by thunderstorm power surges
