About Thermador Cooktop Repair
Thermador's gas cooktops are built around its patented Star burners, whose five-pointed shape gives a longer flame perimeter and more even heat. Many include ExtraLow, which cycles the flame on and off for very gentle simmering. Thermador also makes induction cooktops, including the Freedom induction model that can detect pans anywhere on the surface, and some electric radiant models. Gas models use a single spark module that sends current to every igniter when any knob is turned to light.
Ignition issues are the most common Thermador gas cooktop problem. Continuous clicking after a boilover, burners that won't light because the igniter is cracked or wet, and spark modules that fail are all frequent calls. It is worth knowing that ExtraLow causes periodic clicking as it relights the burner, which is normal. Induction models can have power board, coil, sensor or cooling fan issues, and the full-surface Freedom induction has a more complex electronic system that requires careful testing.
Before calling, make sure all burners are off. Remove the Star burner caps and grates, clean and dry the igniters and burner bases, and reseat the caps carefully, since the star shape must align properly. If clicking continues with the knobs off, a switch may be wet or failing. For induction, reset the breaker and check that pans are magnetic. If you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas utility from outside.
Our technician tests the spark module, igniters, switches and burner valves, and checks cap alignment. For induction, we test the power boards, coils, sensors and cooling fan. You get a diagnosis and the price before any work. For burners that light but burn yellow or lift, we also inspect the orifices and confirm the cooktop is set up for the right gas type.
Ignition parts on Thermador cooktops are reasonable repairs. Induction power boards cost more but usually remain worthwhile compared with replacing the cooktop and modifying the countertop. Cracked glass on an induction top is the exception: the replacement top is expensive, and we will help you weigh it.
Where Thermador Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Spark module or igniter failure stopping Star burners from lighting
- Wet or failing ignition switches causing continuous clicking
- Misaligned Star burner caps producing uneven flames
- Induction power board or cooling fan faults on Freedom induction
