Thermador Repair for Pro-Style Ranges, Columns and Dishwashers

Thermador began in Los Angeles in 1916 and was acquired in 1998 by BSH, the company behind Bosch and Gaggenau. Today it is positioned at the luxury end of the market, often in larger homes and remodeled kitchens in areas like Myers Park, SouthPark and the lake communities around Lake Norman. A typical Thermador kitchen might include a Pro Grand or Pro Harmony range, a Freedom column refrigerator and freezer, a Star Sapphire dishwasher and a MicroDrawer microwave.

The brand's signature is the Star burner, a five-pointed burner shape that increases the length of the flame perimeter for more even heat across the pan. Thermador also offers ExtraLow simmering, induction cooktops, steam and convection wall ovens, and dedicated wine columns.

Thermador's dishwashers and much of its electronics share platforms and design logic with Bosch. That has practical benefits: a technician who understands Bosch's leak protection, flow-through heaters, drain pumps and fault behavior can apply that knowledge directly to Thermador dishwashers. The same is true of many refrigeration sensors and control strategies. It does not mean every part interchanges, so we always order by the exact Thermador model.

On the cooking side, the engineering is more distinctive. Star burners, ExtraLow cycling, griddles, steam ovens and the Pro Grand's dual-fuel ovens all have their own components and quirks. ExtraLow, for example, cycles the flame on and off at very low settings, and the periodic click that comes with it is normal rather than a fault. Knowing which behaviors are by design saves owners from unnecessary repairs.

On cooktops and ranges, ignition problems lead the list: igniters that click continuously after a boilover, burners that won't light because an igniter is cracked or wet, and spark modules that fail outright. Oven-side issues include cooling fans, temperature sensors, convection motors and door locks after self-clean. Freedom column refrigerators and freezers can develop control board faults, ice maker issues and fan problems, and their heavy panel doors need hinge adjustment over time.

Dishwashers most often show drain faults, leak protection that has tripped because water reached the base, or heating problems from the circulation pump and heater assembly. MicroDrawer microwaves have a motorized drawer, and failures there tend to involve the drawer mechanism, latch or control rather than the heating system.

Thunderstorms and the occasional ice storm bring outages and surges, and Thermador's electronic controls, especially on column refrigerators and wall ovens, can be sensitive to them. After a surge, a breaker reset is worth trying before anything else, and a whole-home surge protector is a sensible step for a kitchen with this much electronics. Humid summer air also tests refrigerator door gaskets, and a column door that has sagged slightly can let in enough moisture to cause frost or condensation.

Spring pollen and dust load the grilles that feed air to column refrigeration, which makes the system work harder. Gas cooking appliances deal with grease and spillovers rather than climate, but humidity can make igniters slow to dry after cleaning. For homes on well water in the outer counties, sediment can affect dishwasher inlet valves.
