Houses, Apartments & Condos Across the Charlotte Area
True Manufacturing is a family-founded American refrigeration company based in Missouri, started just after World War II and now one of the largest names in commercial reach-ins and glass-door merchandisers. Its units are known for forced-air cooling and a broad shift to hydrocarbon refrigerant. A True Residential line brings the same approach to home column refrigerators, undercounter units and wine cabinets. We approach a True as continuous-duty equipment that responds well to maintenance, so coil condition, gasket seal, fan operation and defrost behavior get measured before any major part is condemned. We are clear about which parts are in hand and which must be ordered through the commercial or True Residential channel, and we give honest advice on repairing versus replacing.

From Bottle Coolers to Column Refrigerators
The Trulaske family started True Manufacturing in 1945, and the company is still based in O'Fallon, Missouri. Its glass-door merchandisers are a fixture in convenience stores, and its stainless reach-ins, prep tables, undercounters and back-bar coolers are in kitchens of every size. Over the past decade the company also launched True Residential, which builds column refrigerators and freezers, undercounter refrigerators, beverage centers and wine cabinets for homes.
Around Charlotte, that means we see True equipment in two very different settings. One is the restaurant or bar where a reach-in runs around the clock. The other is a renovated kitchen in Myers Park or SouthPark, or a lake house bar near Lake Norman, where an owner chose a True undercounter or wine cabinet for its commercial pedigree.
Forced Air, Hydrocarbons and Defrost Design
True leans on forced-air cooling, with an evaporator fan pushing cold air through the cabinet so temperature recovers quickly after doors open. The company moved much of its line to hydrocarbon refrigerant, mostly R290, which runs efficiently on a small charge. Refrigerators generally use off-cycle defrost, letting the coil clear while the compressor rests, while freezers use electric heaters with a timer or control and a termination device.
That design is reliable, but its performance depends on airflow at two points: across the condenser and through the evaporator. When either is restricted, the cabinet warms and run times stretch. Because a hydrocarbon charge is small, even a slight sealed-system leak shows up quickly as lost cooling, and sealed-system work requires proper tools and handling that owners should never attempt.
The Faults That Bring Us Out to True Units
Door gaskets top the list on commercial True units. Heavy daily use splits the corners and flattens the profile, and on glass-door merchandisers the gasket also takes knocks from carts and customers. Condenser coils clog with kitchen grease or storeroom dust, and condenser fan motors fail after years of constant running. Evaporator fan motors get noisy before they quit.
On freezers, defrost faults are the main concern: a heater that burns open, a timer that stops advancing, or a termination control that sticks will all let the coil ice over. On True Residential units, we more often see door alignment and gasket issues, fan noise and occasional control faults, along with installation problems such as cabinets built in without the ventilation the unit needs.
Humidity, Heat and Outages in the Carolinas
Humid summers are tough on any cabinet with a weak seal. True glass-door merchandisers placed near a store entrance take in outdoor air every time customers walk by, and a failing gasket shows up as heavy condensation and frost. Kitchen heat raises condenser temperatures, and spring pollen and summer dust load coils faster than many owners expect, especially on units that breathe from the front near the floor.
Thunderstorms and the occasional ice storm cause outages and surges. Most True units restart on their own, but electronic controls and fan motors can be damaged, and a compressor restarting under load may trip. A True Residential wine cabinet in a garage or a porch bar can also struggle in summer heat if the model is not rated for that location.
Warranty, Parts and Whether to Repair
True offers manufacturer coverage on its commercial and residential lines, with longer terms on certain components, so check your registration first; we will tell you if your repair looks covered. Out of warranty, we use the commercial or residential parts channel and tell you before starting if a part needs to be ordered. Every ProFix repair has our 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty.
True cabinets are built to be repaired, and gaskets, fans, controls, defrost parts and coil service are nearly always worth it. On a sound cabinet, sealed-system repairs often make sense too. For commercial installations, ProFix handles accessible self-contained units; remote-condensing systems and large walk-ins may need a dedicated refrigeration contractor, and we will be upfront about that.
Looking for model numbers, recall notices or warranty registration? Those live on the manufacturer's own site: True official site. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with True.
