About True Freezer Repair
A True freezer, whether a commercial reach-in, an undercounter unit, a glass-door ice cream merchandiser or a True Residential column freezer, adds an electric defrost system to the brand's forced-air design. A timer or electronic control periodically stops the compressor, energizes a heater on the evaporator coil, and relies on a termination control to end the heat once the coil has cleared. Fan delay controls keep the evaporator fan off until the coil is cold again.
Most freezer-specific failures happen in that sequence. A burned-out heater lets frost grow into a solid block. A timer that stops advancing either never starts defrost or gets stuck in it, leaving the cabinet warm. A termination or fan delay control that fails can keep the fan from restarting or end defrost before the coil clears. Gaskets stiffen in the cold and crack, and a failed perimeter heater lets the gasket freeze to the cabinet frame.
Owners can check a few things safely. With power off, look behind the evaporator cover area for heavy ice and check the cabinet floor and drain for frozen water. Look for torn or brittle gaskets. Make sure the condenser grille is clear. If the coil is iced solid, move product and let the unit defrost naturally with the doors open; do not chip at the ice with tools.
On site, we test heater resistance, observe or force a defrost cycle to confirm the timer or control, check termination and fan delay behavior, and examine the drain heater. We also check condenser condition, because a freezer in a hot space with a dirty coil struggles to recover after each defrost.
Defrost parts and gaskets are inexpensive compared with the cabinet, so repair nearly always wins. Sealed-system repairs on a sound True freezer are often reasonable too, and we will price them against replacement so the choice is yours.
