About Whirlpool Freezer Repair
Whirlpool sells both upright and chest freezers, and many local households keep one in a garage or utility room as overflow storage. Frost-free uprights have an evaporator behind the rear panel with a fan and an automatic defrost system, while manual-defrost uprights and chest freezers have cold plates or coils built into the walls. Some Whirlpool models are marketed as garage-ready, designed to handle a wider range of temperatures. All rely on a compressor with a start relay and overload, and a condenser either exposed at the back or built into the cabinet walls.
On frost-free uprights, the defrost system is the usual failure point, with a heater or defrost thermostat that lets frost cover the evaporator. Fans can also fail. On chest freezers, the most frequent issues are a start relay that cannot get the compressor running, a thermostat that has failed, and door gaskets that leak and let humidity in, creating heavy frost. Freezers in hot garages often struggle in a Carolina summer because heat around the condenser reduces cooling efficiency, especially on units not rated for those temperatures.
Owners can check whether the freezer is plugged into a working outlet and that a GFCI or breaker has not tripped. Clean the condenser area if exposed. Check the door gasket by closing the door on a strip of paper; if it slides out easily, the seal may be weak. Leave space around the freezer for airflow. If you suspect a problem, keep a thermometer inside and note the temperature over a day.
We test the defrost heater, thermostat and control on uprights, check fans, start relay and overload, and the thermostat. We also check door gaskets and alignment. If the compressor does not start, we test it to determine whether the issue is a starting component or the compressor itself.
Defrost, relay, thermostat and gasket repairs are generally worthwhile. A sealed-system failure on an older chest freezer is usually not, since replacement costs less.
Where Whirlpool Freezers Tend to Fail
- Upright defrost heater or thermostat failure, evaporator frosting solid
- Compressor start relay failing, chest freezer clicking but not running
- Door gasket leaking humid air, heavy frost on walls and food
- Garage heat overwhelming condenser on units not rated for it
