About Insignia Freezer Repair
Insignia sells chest freezers, upright freezers and convertible units that can run as either a freezer or a refrigerator. Chest models typically use a manual-defrost design with the cooling lines built into the walls, so there is no fan or defrost system to fail. Uprights may be manual or frost-free, and convertible models add an electronic control that switches between temperature ranges.
Many of these freezers live in garages, and that is where trouble often starts. On hot summer afternoons a Charlotte garage can climb well above the temperature range most freezers are designed for, so the compressor runs constantly and its start relay or overload works harder. A borderline relay often fails after a power outage when the compressor tries to restart against pressure. Other common faults are drifting thermostats, thick frost in manual-defrost chests that are rarely defrosted, broken lid hinges and lid gaskets that no longer seal.
With the freezer unplugged, look at the frost level; ice more than about a quarter inch thick reduces efficiency and should be cleared by a manual defrost, never by chipping with a sharp tool. Make sure the lid or door closes fully and the gasket has no tears. Give the unit open space on all sides, because chest freezers often shed heat through their outer walls. If it went quiet after a storm, wait several minutes before plugging it back in.
Our visit checks the relay, overload, thermostat or control board, compressor current draw and, on frost-free uprights, the defrost components and fan. On convertible units we confirm the mode setting before assuming a fault, since a freezer accidentally set to refrigerator mode looks broken.
Repairing the electrical starting parts or a thermostat is usually worthwhile on a full freezer. A sealed-system leak or compressor failure on a value chest freezer rarely is. We tell you which applies and, if you are still under a protection plan, point you toward it first.
