Avanti makes small chest freezers and compact upright freezers, often bought for dorms, apartments, garages or extra storage near a home bar. Most are manual-defrost designs with evaporator tubing in the walls or shelves, a mechanical thermostat and a small compressor started by a relay. They have no defrost heaters or fans, so the list of possible failures is short, but frost management falls to the owner.

Heavy frost is the most frequent complaint, and in a manual-defrost unit it is usually normal buildup rather than a failure. Frost acts as insulation, so a thick layer makes the freezer work harder and can cause it to struggle to hold temperature. Real faults include a start relay that clicks without starting the compressor, a thermostat that has stopped calling for cooling, and a lid or door gasket that has torn or lost its seal, letting humid air in and speeding frost buildup.

Defrost the freezer when frost reaches about a quarter inch: unplug it, move food to coolers, and let it melt naturally without using sharp tools. Check the gasket for gaps by closing it on a piece of paper and pulling. If the freezer is in a garage, remember that many compact units are not built for extreme heat or cold, and a hot Charlotte summer can push them past their limits. After an outage, wait a few minutes before plugging back in.
