About Maytag Freezer Repair
Maytag's freezer offerings have been limited compared with its laundry line, with upright freezers available in some years and the freezer sections of Maytag refrigerators being far more common. Upright frost-free freezers use an evaporator with a fan and automatic defrost behind the rear panel, while refrigerator freezers share the cooling system with the fresh-food side. Both rely on a compressor with a start relay and an overload, and a condenser near the bottom of the unit.
Defrost failures are the most common problem in Maytag frost-free freezers. A failed heater or thermostat lets frost build on the evaporator until airflow drops and the freezer warms. Evaporator fans can fail or strike ice. A compressor that clicks but does not run usually points to a start relay or overload failure, though it can also signal a compressor problem. Door gaskets that do not seal let humid air in, creating frost quickly in summer. Freezers in hot garages may run constantly and struggle to hold temperature.
Owners can check the outlet and breaker or GFCI, especially for units in garages. Clean the condenser area at the bottom if accessible, after unplugging. Close the door on a piece of paper to test the gasket. Make sure the door closes fully and nothing inside is blocking it. A thermometer inside the freezer helps show how temperature changes over a day. Avoid chipping ice off the evaporator, which can damage it.
We test the defrost heater, thermostat and control, check the evaporator and condenser fans, and test the start relay and overload. We also inspect gaskets and door alignment. If the compressor does not start, we determine whether the start components or the compressor itself has failed.
Defrost, fan, relay and gasket repairs are typically worthwhile. A sealed-system failure on an older freezer usually is not, and we will tell you so directly.
