About Maytag Dryer Repair
Maytag dryers today share the Whirlpool dryer platform: a belt wraps the drum and runs over an idler pulley to a motor that also turns the blower, with the drum resting on rear rollers and a front support. Electric models use a heating element in a rear housing; gas units use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. Maytag adds features such as steam, sanitize and wrinkle prevention. Older pre-2006 Maytag dryers used different designs and parts.
The most familiar Maytag dryer noise is a high-pitched squeal from a worn idler pulley, which often starts faintly and grows louder. Worn rollers make a rumbling or thumping noise, and a broken belt leaves the drum still while the motor runs. No-heat problems usually involve a blown thermal fuse or thermal cut-off, a failed element, or on gas models a weak igniter or coils. A restricted vent is the most common trigger for heat-related failures, especially with long vent runs from upstairs laundry rooms.
Owners should unplug the dryer before any check. Clean the lint screen and its housing. Inspect the vent duct behind the dryer for kinks, and go outside to make sure the vent hood opens and airflow is strong. Check both breaker legs on electric dryers, and confirm the gas valve is open on gas units. If you ever smell gas, leave right away and call the gas company once you are outside.
We remove the panels to inspect the idler pulley, belt and rollers, test the thermal fuse, thermostats and element or igniter and coils, and check vent airflow. We usually recommend replacing the pulley, belt and rollers together if they show similar wear.
Maytag dryers are mechanically simple and almost always worth repairing. Even an older unit with noise or no-heat problems is typically a sensible repair.
Where Maytag Dryers Tend to Fail
- Idler pulley worn, high-pitched squeal during every cycle
- Drum rollers flattened, thumping or rumbling as the drum turns
- Thermal fuse or cut-off blown by restricted exhaust airflow
- Gas valve coils weakening, heat cutting out once warm
