About LG Dryer Repair
LG dryers are not direct-drive like LG washers. They use a conventional belt around the drum, driven by a motor that also powers the blower, with rear rollers and a front bearing or slides supporting the drum. Electric units heat with an element; gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and valve coils. Many LG dryers add a moisture sensor, steam features and a heat pump on some newer models, plus Flow Sense, which watches the exhaust and warns when airflow is restricted.
Flow Sense is often the first clue to trouble. LG dryers may display d80, d90 or d95 when exhaust restriction reaches different levels, and a dryer that keeps flagging this will run longer, run hotter and eventually trip a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat. Beyond vent problems, we see failed heating elements, open thermistors reported as tE1 or tE2, and on gas units weak igniters. Mechanical wear shows up as a squealing idler, thumping from flat-spotted rollers and a drum that will not turn because the belt snapped.
Owners can start with the lint screen, then disconnect the transition duct behind the dryer and look for lint packed inside. Go outside while the dryer runs and check that the exhaust hood opens freely; birds and pollen often block hoods in spring. Confirm both breaker legs are on for an electric model. Always unplug the dryer before moving it, and if you smell gas, get everyone out and call the gas company from outside.
We test vent pressure, check thermistors, thermal fuse and high-limit, and measure element resistance or igniter current. For noise, we inspect the belt, idler and rollers together. If a vent run is unusually long, common in upstairs laundry rooms, we will explain how that affects drying times and heater life.
LG dryer repairs are typically straightforward and well worth it. Even a main board replacement usually makes sense on a dryer less than a decade old.
Where LG Dryers Tend to Fail
- Exhaust restriction triggering d80 to d95 flow sense warnings
- Thermistor open or shorted, shown as tE1 or tE2 errors
- Heating element or thermal fuse failure, dryer tumbling cold
- Worn idler pulley, rollers or snapped belt on the drum drive
