LG refrigerators stand out mostly for two features: the linear compressor used in many models, and the elaborate door designs, from InstaView glass to Door-in-Door bins and in-door ice makers on French-door units. The compressor is efficient and nearly silent when healthy, driven by a magnetic piston rather than a crankshaft, and it relies on an electronic drive board. The doors put ice production in the fresh-food side, which LG refers to in some models as Slim SpacePlus.

LG fridges usually announce trouble with a display code. Er IF points to the ice fan, Er FF to the freezer fan, Er dH to the defrost heater circuit and Er CO to a communication fault between boards. A fridge that gradually warms with no code, or that runs constantly and stays warm, is where we look hard at the compressor, because a known range of model years had linear compressor failures. Ice buildup in the door ice maker compartment is the other repeat issue, leaving a jammed bin, a slow dispenser or water leaking down the door.

Before you call, note any code on the display. Unplug the refrigerator, wait a few minutes and plug it back in to see whether the code returns. Clean the condenser area if your model allows access from the front or rear. Make sure the ice compartment door inside the fridge latches firmly and that its gasket is not folded. If the problem appeared right after a power outage, mention that; it narrows down the likely parts.
