Most use a mechanical thermostat with a dial, a compact compressor started by a relay mounted on its side, and a static condenser on the back or a hidden condenser in the cabinet walls. Smaller models often have a manual-defrost freezer compartment, while some larger ones use a fan and automatic defrost. Knowing which type you have saves time.

The most common Avanti refrigerator complaint is that it either stopped cooling or freezes everything. A thermostat that fails closed runs the compressor nonstop and freezes produce; one that fails open never calls for cooling at all. If you hear a click from the back every few minutes but the cabinet stays warm, the start relay or overload is often to blame. A small freezer box clogged with frost can starve the fresh-food side too, which looks like a breakdown but is usually a defrost habit.

There are safe things to try. Turn the thermostat through its range and listen for a click as it calls for cooling. Make sure the unit has clearance at the back and sides; a compact fridge squeezed into a cabinet can overheat. If the freezer box is iced, unplug the fridge, prop the doors open and let it defrost fully before restarting. After an outage, wait a few minutes before plugging it back in.
