Avanti Range Repair

The Avanti electric range is a common fix for kitchens too small for a 30-inch model, from condos in older Uptown buildings to accessory apartments in Plaza Midwood backyards. Most are 20- or 24-inch freestanding units with four coil or radiant surface elements and a compact oven, controlled by infinite switches and a basic thermostat or electronic control. They run on a 240-volt circuit like full-size ranges, which surprises some owners.

When nothing works, check the breaker and power supply first; a loose plug or a burned terminal connection can kill the whole range. When one burner fails, the element or its terminal connection is usually the cause. Ovens commonly lose their bake element, and electronic controls can fail after power surges from summer storms. Because components are close together in a compact chassis, heat from a failing connection can damage nearby wiring.

Check the breaker panel and reset the range breaker fully. With power off, look at coil elements and receptacles for burn marks. Make sure the oven door closes snugly. If the range was recently moved, confirm the cord is fully plugged in and the anti-tip bracket is in place. Avoid using a burner or oven that smells of burning plastic.
