About Hotpoint Range Repair
The Hotpoint electric range is one of the most common appliances in rental kitchens and starter homes around the region. It combines four surface units, either coil or radiant glass-top, with a bake-and-broil oven, all fed by a 240-volt circuit through a terminal block at the back. The controls on most models are a mix of infinite switches for the burners and a basic electronic or mechanical oven control. Because the whole range shares one power feed, some faults affect everything at once.
If nothing on the range works, the first suspects are a tripped double-pole breaker, a loose or burned terminal block connection, or a failed power cord. When half the range works and half does not, one leg of the 240-volt supply is often missing, which is an electrical problem, not a range problem. Individual faults are more familiar: a coil element that has burned out, a receptacle that has scorched, a broil element that splits, or a clock display that goes dark after a power surge.
Before calling, check the breaker panel and reset the range breaker fully off then on. Look at the clock, since a dead display combined with working burners points to the control rather than the supply. With the breaker off, you can swap a suspect coil element into another position to test it. Do not pull the range out and open the terminal block cover unless you are comfortable with high-voltage wiring and the breaker is off.
Our diagnosis starts by measuring the supply voltage at the terminal block, then working through each burner, the oven elements and the controls. We check the cord and block for heat damage, since a loose connection there can be a fire hazard. We tell you what we find and give you a price before doing the work.
Most Hotpoint range repairs involve inexpensive parts. A replacement oven control on an older range is the case where buying new can make more sense.
Where Hotpoint Ranges Tend to Fail
- Burned terminal block connection cutting power to the whole range
- Missing 240-volt leg leaving half the range dead
- Scorched coil receptacle at a single surface unit
- Oven control board or display damaged by a power surge
