About Smeg Range Repair
Smeg's larger ranges, including the Portofino line, are built for the US market in widths that fit standard American kitchen openings, while keeping Italian styling and color options. Depending on the model, they pair gas burners or an induction top with an electric multifunction convection oven, and the widest versions add a second oven. Under the hood, they combine the parts of a Smeg cooktop and a Smeg wall oven: spark ignition and burner valves above, and elements, a convection fan and a cooling fan below.
Because a dual-fuel range needs both gas and a proper electrical supply, faults can come from either side. We frequently find a failed convection element or fan motor, an oven temperature sensor drifting, a cooling fan that has stopped, or burners clicking because of spills around the igniter switches. On induction ranges, power boards and fans under the cooktop are the more sensitive parts, especially after a thunderstorm surge. The heavy oven door also puts load on its hinges.
Before calling, turn off the breaker or gas as appropriate. Check that the clock is set after any outage, try a different oven function to see whether only fan modes have failed, and reseat any burner caps that have shifted. Keep the range's rear vents and the toe-kick area clear. Never adjust the gas connection yourself, and leave and call the gas utility or 911 if you smell gas.
We test both the gas side and the electrical side, using the model and serial data on the rating plate. On larger ranges we check supply voltage and whether the circuit matches the installation requirements, since an undersized supply can mimic a failed element. You get the diagnosis and the price before we start, and we tell you if a part is imported.
On a range that is otherwise sound, element, fan, igniter and sensor repairs are good value. Control board failures on an older range warrant a careful comparison.
Where Smeg Ranges Tend to Fail
- Convection element or fan motor failing in the electric oven
- Spills reaching burner igniter switches, causing constant sparking
- Induction power board damage after storm surges or outages
- Undersized or loose electrical supply mimicking element failure
