Kenmore Refrigerator Repair

Kenmore refrigerators were built by Whirlpool, Frigidaire and LG, among others, so the first thing we check is the three-digit prefix on the model number. A 106 prefix usually means Whirlpool, 253 points to Frigidaire, and 795 to LG. Top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side and French-door Kenmore models exist from each maker, and each carries that maker's design and weaknesses.

On Whirlpool-built Kenmore refrigerators, we often see defrost problems, ice maker failures and evaporator fan issues. Frigidaire-built units are known for evaporator fan motors that squeal and fail, defrost timer or heater failures, and door gaskets that harden. LG-built Kenmore Elite models use electronic controls and, on many models, LG's linear compressor, and can develop ice maker freezing and compressor issues. Each requires a slightly different approach. Older 106 models with a mechanical defrost timer can stall in the cooling or defrost phase, which looks like a failed compressor but is a far cheaper fix. Frigidaire-built side-by-sides also tend to clog the defrost drain, sending water under the crisper drawers.

Before calling, find the model number on the label inside the fresh-food compartment and share it when booking. Check that the condenser coils at the bottom or back are not packed with dust. Make sure the doors close fully and the gaskets seal. Look for heavy frost on the freezer's back panel. Unplug the refrigerator or turn off its breaker before removing any covers.

Fan, defrost, gasket and ice maker repairs are usually worthwhile on a Kenmore. A sealed-system failure on an older top-freezer may cost more than the refrigerator is worth, and we will tell you plainly. On an LG-built Kenmore Elite with a compressor fault, check whether any extended compressor coverage applies to your unit before paying for that repair.
