About True Refrigerator Repair
True refrigerators span a wide range, from solid-door reach-ins and prep tables in kitchens to glass-door merchandisers in stores and True Residential column and undercounter units in homes. Most share the same core: a forced-air evaporator that circulates cold air quickly, a compressor and condenser in a separate compartment, and off-cycle defrost that lets the coil clear while the compressor rests. Many newer units run on R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant.
Warm-cabinet complaints usually come from airflow. A condenser coil packed with grease or dust raises head pressure and makes the compressor work harder. A condenser fan motor that slows or seizes overheats the system. Inside, an evaporator fan that has failed or is obstructed by product leaves warm zones. On glass-door units, gaskets damaged by carts and constant traffic let warm humid air in, which also frosts the coil and stretches defrost time.
To check safely, turn the unit off and look at the condenser through the grille. Remove dust from the face of the coil with a soft brush and vacuum. Make sure product is not stacked against the evaporator fan or blocking air vents. Close doors on a strip of paper around the frame to test the gaskets. On True Residential units, confirm the toe-kick or front grille is not blocked by trim or rugs.
When we arrive, we measure cabinet temperature independently, then check condenser and evaporator fan operation, compressor current and the temperature drop across the coil. On merchandisers we test door heaters and lighting circuits that can add heat. We tell you the cause and the price before we replace anything, including whether a part is in hand or has to be ordered.
True refrigerators are built to last, and most repairs short of a sealed-system fault are clearly worth doing. Even then, a sound cabinet often justifies the repair, and we will help you weigh it.
Where True Refrigerators Tend to Fail
- Glass-door gasket damage from carts letting humid air frost the coil
- Condenser fan motor failure overheating the compressor compartment
- Evaporator fan blocked by product, creating warm zones in the cabinet
- Door heater failure on merchandisers causing heavy exterior condensation
