Maytag Refrigerator Repair

Current Maytag refrigerators are built on Whirlpool platforms and include top-freezer, side-by-side, French-door and four-door models, many with the PowerCold feature for quick cooling and some with in-door ice. Most use a single evaporator in the freezer with a fan, an air damper or duct to cool the fresh-food side, and a defrost system with a heater and thermostat or sensor. Older Maytag-era refrigerators may still be running in some homes, and those use different parts.

The most common failures on Maytag refrigerators involve defrost and airflow. When a defrost heater or thermostat fails, frost covers the evaporator, airflow slows, and the fresh-food section warms first. Evaporator fan motors also fail and may make a squealing or clicking sound before they stop. Ice makers frequently stop filling because of a frozen fill tube or failed inlet valve. Condenser fans that stop running can cause overheating and poor cooling, especially in a hot garage or kitchen during summer.

Owners can check a few things safely. Make sure food is not blocking the vents inside either compartment. Unplug the fridge, clean the condenser coils and check that the condenser fan spins freely. Look for frost on the freezer's back wall. For the ice maker, make sure it is turned on and that the water supply valve is open, and replace the water filter if it is old. If water pools under the crisper drawers, the defrost drain may be blocked.

We test the defrost heater, thermostat or sensor and defrost control, check the evaporator and condenser fans, and test the ice maker and water valve. If cooling is still poor after those checks, we evaluate the sealed system and explain the cost before any decision.

Defrost, fan, ice maker and valve repairs are usually modest and worth doing on a Maytag refrigerator. Sealed-system repairs on older units are often close to replacement cost, and we will be straightforward about that.
