About Kenmore Cooktop Repair
Kenmore sold drop-in cooktops in gas, electric radiant and, more recently, induction versions. Many were built by Frigidaire, while some Elite models came from Whirlpool or other makers. Gas models use sealed burners with spark ignition. Radiant models use elements under ceramic glass with knob or touch controls. Induction models use magnetic coils and power boards, with a cooling fan underneath. Some older Kenmore cooktops combined gas burners with a downdraft vent or a modular grill section, which adds its own parts.
On gas Kenmore cooktops, igniters and spark modules foul from boil-overs, and burner ports clog. Radiant cooktops can lose an element, switch or control, and hot-surface indicator lights may fail. Induction models depend on their cooling fan and power boards. Because Kenmore cooktops came from several makers, parts and diagnostic approaches vary. Hot-surface lights matter because they warn that the glass is still hot after cooking, so a failed light should be fixed promptly. Older models with mechanical infinite switches tend to fail one burner at a time, which makes the repair simple.
Look for the model number under the cooktop, often on the underside visible from the cabinet below, and share it when booking. Check that the breaker is on and, for gas, the supply valve is open. Clean burner caps and bases after spills. On induction models, use magnetic cookware and keep the fan intake clear. If the cooktop trips the breaker or you smell gas, stop using it and call for help.
Our diagnosis confirms the maker, then tests igniters, spark modules, valves, elements, switches, controls and induction boards. We confirm the cooktop is on a properly sized circuit. Most work happens from above or below the counter without removing the cooktop.
Most Kenmore cooktop repairs are worthwhile, especially when the countertop cutout would make replacement tricky. Discontinued parts on older models may limit the repair, and we will tell you before any work begins. If the cooktop is still covered by a store protection plan, check that coverage first.
Where Kenmore Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Gas igniters and burner ports fouled by spills
- Radiant element or infinite switch failure
- Hot-surface indicator light failing on glass models
- Induction power board or cooling fan failure on newer units
