About KitchenAid Cooktop Repair
KitchenAid cooktops drop into the countertop and include gas models with high-output burners, electric radiant models, induction models and versions with a built-in downdraft vent. Some gas models offer five burners and continuous grates. Induction models use copper coils and electronic power boards, with a cooling fan underneath to keep the electronics in range. Downdraft models also tuck a blower and ductwork into the cabinet below, which takes up drawer space but pulls smoke down rather than up.
On gas cooktops, boil-overs foul igniters and burner ports, and spark modules or burner switches can fail. On electric models, radiant elements and controls wear out over time. Induction cooktops are sensitive to their cooling system and power boards; a blocked or failed fan can cause power reduction or shutdowns, and a surge can damage a board. Downdraft models add a blower motor that can fail or a vent that sticks.
Check that the breaker is on and, for gas, that the supply valve is open. Clean burner caps and bases and let them dry. On induction, confirm a magnet sticks to your cookware and keep the area under the counter clear of anything that might block the fan. On downdraft models, clean the grease filter. If you smell gas or the cooktop trips the breaker repeatedly, stop using it and call for help.
During diagnosis, we test igniters, spark modules, valves, elements, induction boards, coils and fans. For downdraft models, we check the blower and vent mechanism. We also confirm the cooktop is on a properly sized circuit. Most work happens from above or below the counter without removing the cooktop entirely.
Most ignition, element and fan repairs are worth doing on a KitchenAid cooktop, especially since the countertop cutout is already sized for it. Multiple board failures on an older induction cooktop may change the math, and we will lay it out clearly.
Where KitchenAid Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Gas burner igniters and ports fouled by spills
- Induction cooling fan blocked or failing, reducing power
- Induction power board damaged by surge or wear
- Downdraft blower motor or vent mechanism sticking
