About Roper Cooktop Repair
Standalone Roper cooktops are not common, so most surface-burner work on Roper equipment involves the top of a Roper range. Electric Ropers almost always use plug-in coil elements set in drip pans, each controlled by an infinite switch that cycles power on and off. Older built-in cooktops with the Roper badge follow the same design. Because each burner is its own circuit, a failure is usually limited to one position.
The classic Roper surface problem is a coil that heats only sometimes, or stops when you move a pan. The receptacle behind the drip pan has usually overheated and the contacts have lost tension, or the element terminals have pitted. A burner that glows red at every setting points to a failed infinite switch. Less often, the wiring between the switch and the receptacle has cooked from years of heat, especially when the range has sat with loose terminals.
With the breaker off, lift a suspect coil out of its receptacle and look closely at both ends. Scorching, blue discoloration or a melted receptacle face means the receptacle needs replacing. Try a known-good element of the same size in the suspect position to see whether the problem follows the coil. Keep drip pans clean, since spills that reach the receptacle speed corrosion. Do not use a burner that sparks or smells of burning plastic.
We test each element and switch, inspect receptacles and wiring, and replace damaged connections with high-temperature wire and proper terminals rather than splicing. We recommend replacing a coil whose terminals are pitted at the same time as its receptacle, so the new part is not damaged on day one. The diagnosis and price come before the work.
Coil, receptacle and switch repairs are among the cheapest jobs on any Roper and are almost always worth doing.
Where Roper Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Overheated receptacle losing contact tension behind the drip pan
- Pitted coil element terminals causing intermittent heating
- Infinite switch failure leaving a burner glowing at all settings
- Heat-damaged wiring between switch and receptacle on older units
