About Roper Oven / Range Repair
Roper ovens are the lower section of Whirlpool-built freestanding ranges. Gas ovens use a hot-surface glow-bar igniter wired in series with the safety valve, so the valve opens only when the igniter draws enough current. Electric ovens use separate bake and broil elements controlled by a temperature sensor and either a mechanical thermostat on older models or an electronic control on newer ones. Each layout fails in a few typical ways.
Gas Roper ovens that take a long time to preheat or never light are very often suffering from a weak igniter. It glows, but not hot enough to pull the current the valve needs, so the oven stays cold or lights late with a small whoosh. Electric ovens more often lose a bake element, which can burn through with a visible bright spot. Uneven baking or burned bottoms can come from a sensor drifting out of range, a door gasket that has flattened, or a mechanical thermostat that needs calibrating.
You can check some things safely. With the oven off, look through the window during preheat on a gas model: the igniter should glow bright and the burner should light within about a minute or two. On electric ovens, turn off the breaker and look at the bake element for blisters or breaks. A stand-alone oven thermometer shows whether the temperature matches the dial. If a gas oven ever smells strongly of gas, shut it off, leave the home and call the utility from outside.
We measure igniter current, test the valve, check element continuity and sensor resistance, and look at the wiring and terminals in the back of the oven. On older Ropers with mechanical thermostats, we check calibration and the capillary bulb. You will have a diagnosis and price before we start.
Igniters, elements and sensors are modest repairs on a Roper oven and usually worth doing. A failed electronic control on an aging range is the main exception.
Where Roper Oven / Ranges Tend to Fail
- Weak bake igniter failing to draw enough current for the valve
- Burned-out electric bake element with visible breaks or blisters
- Temperature sensor drifting out of range causing uneven baking
- Mechanical oven thermostat out of calibration on older models
