About Roper Washer Repair
There are two generations of Roper top-loaders in local homes. Older machines use Whirlpool's direct-drive design, where a reversible motor connects to the transmission through a plastic-and-rubber coupler and the pump bolts to the motor. Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin. Knowing which one you have narrows the diagnosis immediately.
On older direct-drive Ropers, a very common complaint is an agitator that turns in one direction but not the other, or whose top section spins freely. That is worn agitator dogs, small plastic cogs inside the agitator. A washer that fills but will neither agitate nor spin, often with a burning smell, usually has a broken motor coupler. Newer Ropers more often show lid lock faults, shifter problems or a jammed drain pump, and on any model a sock in the pump or a kinked drain hose can stop the cycle.
With the washer unplugged, you can pull the agitator cap on many older models and check whether the top portion spins loose. Look behind the machine at the drain hose, and confirm the lid closes fully on the switch or lock. If the washer walks across the floor during spin, try a smaller, evenly distributed load and check that the machine is level before assuming a part has failed.
At the visit, we identify the platform, run any available service test, and check the coupler, dogs, lid circuit, shifter, pump and motor. Many of these repairs can be done in place without pulling the machine far from the wall, though stacked or closet installs in apartments take longer.
Couplers, dogs, lid switches and pumps are inexpensive and worth replacing. A failed transmission or gearcase on an older Roper often tips the balance toward a new washer, and we will tell you which side you are on.
Where Roper Washers Tend to Fail
- Worn agitator dogs letting the upper agitator freewheel
- Broken motor coupler stopping both agitation and spin
- Lid lock failure on newer low-profile Roper models
- Drain pump jammed by small clothing or lint buildup
