About Amana Washer Repair
Most Amana washers are top-loaders with either a traditional agitator or a low-profile impeller, built on Whirlpool's top-load platforms. Older models used Whirlpool's classic direct-drive design with a motor coupler, while newer ones use a belt-driven gearcase with an electronic shifter and a lid lock that holds the lid closed during spin. Controls are usually simple dials and buttons.
On newer Amana top-loaders, lid lock failures are common. If the lock cannot confirm the lid is closed, the washer will not spin or may stop mid-cycle. Shifter faults keep the washer from switching between agitate and spin. Drain pumps clog with socks, coins or lint. Suspension rods wear and cause heavy shaking during spin. On older direct-drive models, a worn motor coupler stops agitation or spin. Agitator models with a two-piece agitator can also wear the small dogs inside the upper section, so the top half stops turning.
Make sure the lid closes fully and nothing is caught in the latch. Balance the load and avoid washing one heavy item alone. Check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe. If your home is on a well, the inlet screens where the hoses connect may need cleaning, with the water turned off first. Unplug the washer before tilting or moving it, and never bypass the lid lock.
Our diagnosis runs the washer's service test where available, then checks the lid lock, shifter, motor, drain pump and suspension. On older direct-drive models, we inspect the coupler and transmission. Amana washer parts cross over to the matching Whirlpool and Maytag top-loaders, which keeps them in steady supply.
Lid lock, pump, coupler and suspension repairs are inexpensive and usually worth it on an Amana washer. A failed gearcase or transmission on an older machine may cost close to a new one, and we will tell you honestly. For a rental, a basic Amana top-loader is simple enough that a quick lid lock or pump repair usually keeps it running reliably for years.
