About Amana Oven / Range Repair
Most Amana ovens we work on are the oven cavity of a freestanding range, since Amana offers only a limited selection of wall ovens. Gas ovens use a hot-surface bake igniter that glows and opens the gas valve, while electric ovens use bake and broil elements. Controls are usually simple, with a temperature sensor and either a basic electronic board or mechanical controls. Many have a self-clean or steam-clean cycle. Lower-end Amana ranges use a bake element under the oven floor on some models and an exposed element on others, which changes how the repair is done.
On gas Amana ovens, the bake igniter is the most common failure. An aging igniter still glows orange but draws too little current to open the valve, so the oven takes several minutes to catch or never does. Electric ovens commonly need new bake or broil elements, often with a visible break or blister. The oven sensor, a thin probe on the back wall, can drift and throw baking off by a noticeable margin. Control boards can fail, especially after power surges, and self-clean cycles can expose weak parts.
Start by checking that the breaker is on and, for gas ovens, the gas valve behind the range is open. Look at the elements for visible damage. An igniter that glows for a long time with no flame is the classic Amana bake failure. Avoid running self-clean to fix a heating problem. If you smell gas, get out of the house and call the gas company or 911 once outside.
Our diagnosis measures the igniter's current draw, tests the gas valve, and checks elements, sensor and control. We confirm calibration too. Amana parts are shared with Whirlpool, so most are easy to get. For wall ovens, we may need to slide the unit out for access.
Igniters, elements and sensors are inexpensive and almost always worth replacing on an Amana. A failed control on an older basic range may cost close to a new one, and we will tell you honestly.
Where Amana Oven / Ranges Tend to Fail
- Gas bake igniter glowing but too weak to light the burner
- Bake or broil element burned through or blistered
- Temperature sensor drifting and causing hot or cold baking
- Control board damaged by a surge or self-clean heat
