About Kenmore Oven / Range Repair
Most Kenmore ovens are part of a freestanding or slide-in range, and many were built by Frigidaire with a 790 model prefix. Kenmore also sold wall ovens and some ranges built by other manufacturers. Gas ovens use a hot-surface bake igniter to open the gas valve, electric ovens use bake and broil elements, and newer models add convection and electronic controls. Older Kenmore ranges often used a mechanical thermostat and clock, while newer ones moved to electronic control boards with touch panels.
On Frigidaire-built Kenmore gas ovens, the bake igniter is the most common failure. As it weakens, the oven lights slowly or not at all, even though the igniter glows. Electric ovens commonly need new bake or broil elements, often with a visible break. Temperature sensors drift, causing the oven to run hot or cold. Control boards on newer models can fail, especially after storms. On electric models, a broil element that glows only along part of its length is close to failing and should be replaced before it splits. Self-clean cycles on aging Kenmore ovens also push sensors, door locks and boards hard.
Find the model number, usually behind the storage drawer or on the oven frame, and share it when booking. Check the breaker and, for gas ovens, the gas valve behind the range. Look at the elements for visible damage. If a gas oven glows but does not light, the igniter is likely the issue. If you notice a gas smell, step outside before calling the gas utility or 911.
Our diagnosis confirms the manufacturer, then tests the igniter's current draw, the gas valve, elements, sensor and control board. We check oven calibration too. A Kenmore wall oven sometimes has to come partway out of its cabinet so we can reach the wiring.
Igniters, elements and sensors are inexpensive and usually worth replacing on a Kenmore oven. Older Kenmore control boards can be discontinued, and if that limits the repair we will tell you upfront and help you weigh replacement.
Where Kenmore Oven / Ranges Tend to Fail
- Frigidaire-built gas bake igniter too weak to open the valve
- Bake or broil element burned out on electric models
- Oven temperature sensor drifting and causing uneven baking
- Discontinued control boards limiting repairs on older units
