About Kenmore Washer Repair

Kenmore washers came from Whirlpool, LG and Frigidaire. The model prefix 110 usually means a Whirlpool-built top-load or front-load washer, 796 points to LG, and 417 to Frigidaire front-loaders. Top-load Kenmore washers from Whirlpool are especially common in older homes, and many are still running. Front-load Kenmore Elite washers were often LG-built. Laundry pairs from Sears were often sold as matched sets, so the dryer beside the washer may share the same maker and the same model prefix.

Whirlpool-built top-loaders commonly need lid switches, drive couplers on older direct-drive models, or shifters and pumps on newer ones. LG-built front-loaders often develop door boot mildew, drain pump clogs and, as they age, bearing noise. Frigidaire-built front-loaders share many of the same front-load issues. Each manufacturer's washer also displays different error codes, so the code itself means different things depending on who built the machine. On the classic Whirlpool direct-drive design, a rubber-and-plastic coupler between the motor and transmission is deliberately the weak link, and a worn coupler means the washer fills and drains but will not agitate or spin. LG-built Kenmore front-loaders more often report unbalanced loads and slow drains.

Find the model number, often on the back of the lid or inside the door frame, and share it when booking. On front-loaders, leave the door open between loads, clean the door boot and dispenser, and clean the drain filter if your model has one, after unplugging and putting towels down. On top-loaders, make sure the load is balanced and the lid closes firmly. Do not bypass the lid switch.

Our diagnosis confirms the maker, then runs the appropriate service test or diagnostic mode and checks the specific components. On Whirlpool-built top-loaders, we test the lid switch, motor, coupler or shifter and pump. On LG-built front-loaders, we test the drain pump, door lock, motor and control.

Many repairs on older Whirlpool-built Kenmore washers are inexpensive and well worth it. Bearing failure on an older front-loader may cost a large share of a new washer, and we will tell you honestly. Parts for those older Whirlpool-built top-loaders are still widely stocked.

Where Kenmore Washers Tend to Fail

  • Lid switch failure on Whirlpool-built top-loaders stopping spin
  • Drive coupler worn on older direct-drive Kenmore top-loaders
  • Drain pump clogged on LG-built front-load Kenmore Elite washers
  • Front-load door boot mildew and bearing noise as machines age
