About Roper Dryer Repair
Roper dryers are built on Whirlpool's long-running 29-inch platform, one of the most widely serviced dryer designs in the country. A single motor turns the drum by a belt and spins the blower wheel directly. Electric models use a coil heating element with a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cutoff on the heater housing, plus a thermal fuse on the blower housing. Gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils.
No heat is the top Roper dryer complaint, and the thermal fuse or thermal cutoff is the usual culprit. Both are safety devices that open when the dryer overheats, and both usually fail because of a restricted vent. A dryer that will not start at all may also have a blown thermal fuse, since on many Roper models it sits in the motor circuit. Squealing points to a dry idler pulley, thumping to worn drum rollers, and a motor that runs while the drum sits still to a broken belt.
Owners can do a lot to prevent repeat failures. With the dryer unplugged, clean the lint screen housing with a vacuum crevice tool and check the flexible duct behind the machine for crushing or sagging. Go outside while the dryer is running and feel the airflow at the vent hood. Long runs to a roof or side wall in two-story homes with upstairs laundry need professional cleaning more often than short runs.
During diagnosis we test the fuse, cutoff, high limit, element or gas components, and inspect the belt, idler and rollers. When a heat safety part has failed, we check the vent and recommend the cleaning it needs, because we do not want to replace the same fuse again in a few months. You get the diagnosis and price first.
Almost every Roper dryer repair uses inexpensive parts. Unless the drum is rusted or the motor has failed on a very old unit, repair is usually the right call.
Where Roper Dryers Tend to Fail
- Thermal fuse on the blower housing blown by vent restriction
- Heater thermal cutoff and high-limit thermostat failure stopping heat
- Snapped drive belt leaving the drum stationary while motor runs
- Dry idler pulley squealing or drum rollers thumping during tumble
